Papers of Hiram Farrand, 1861-1864.

Letters from Hiram Farrand to his brother Samuel Ashbel Farrand, member of the Newark Board of Education and Professor of the Newark Academy, posted from various places in South Carolina, Florida, and Virginia. Some letters were written on board of the steamers the "Star of the South" and the "Burnside," including one written in a Miner's and Traveler's Letter Book (1850). Also included is a journal of a Newark delegate of the United States Christian Commission to the Gettysburg battlefield.

Hiram Farrand, resident of Newark, N.J. enrolled in Company F of the 1st New York Volunteer Engineers Regiment in Sept. 1861. In October he was commissioned the 2nd Lieutenant, and in Feb. 1862 promoted to First Lieutenant of Co. E. In Dec. 21, 1863 he was appointed acting regimental adjutant. In March 1864 Farrand was commissioned Captain of Co. D. During his service, he took part in battles of Hilton Head, Secessionville, Coosawatchie River, Carlton and Frampton Plantations, Morris Island, sie...
